About Dr.
Maureen McSweeney
Dr.
McSweeney is a licensed psychologist. She earned a
Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from New York University. To her work with art
therapy techniques, Dr. McSweeney brings a background as an
artist, with a B.A. in Studio Art from Marymount College and
M.P.S. (Masters in Professional Studies) in Art Therapy from Pratt Institute.
Dr. McSweeney has recently expanded her training in trauma
treatment by re-taking EMDR level I training and completing
level 2 training with William Zangwill, Ph.D. of New York
City in 2007. She is currently in an ongoing advanced
training group with Gina Collelli, LCSW, who is on the
faculty of the Trauma Studies Center, New York, N.Y. She
completed a yearlong training program in "Integrating
Spirituality and Science into Psychotherapy and Healing,"
focusing on Energy Psychology (Emotional Freedom Technique
and Tapas Acupressure technique), with Dr. Henry Grayson
(Founder of National Institute for the Psychotherapies and
Director of the Center for Spirituality and Psychotherapy).
Prior to
full-time independent practice, Dr. McSweeney worked in distinguished
institutions: as a psychologist and staff trainer at the Integrative Care Center at the Hospital
for Special Surgery, University Pain Center, and Arthrofitness and Sports Rehabilitation,
and as an intern at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. She
worked as a creative arts therapist at the North Richmond
Community Mental Health Center of St. Vincent's Medical
Center. She has special understanding of artists, in
the visual and performing arts.
Dr.
McSweeney has taught at New York University in its graduate
Department in Counseling Psychology and at the State
University of New York. She has conducted workshops
for the patients and their families sponsored by the
Arthritis Foundation and for the public sponsored by the
Hospital for Special Surgery. She has written journal
articles in The Journal of GS0-SEHNAP and Pratt
Creative Arts Therapy Review,
Dr. McSweeney is a
member of the American Psychological Association, New York
State Psychological Association, and the Association for
Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback.
She was interviewed on television
on Good Morning America on ABC, the Discovery Health
Channel, and the Annual Telethon of the Long Island Chapter
of the Arthritis Foundation on WLNY.
